Desley Middleton Born 27/9/1930 diagnosed 5/2004
November 2003 I started to feel a shortness of breath. I was told by my GP that it was most likely old age starting. Also I began to feel pain in my legs and feet, this was said to be caused by my bad knees.
December 2003 I used to spend a lot of time in my garden going from one job to another. About this time I started to lose a lot of energy, I found I was always tired and could go to sleep any time.
January 2004 I started to develop a cough and runny nose much the same symptoms as if I was getting a cold I was using an Asmol Spray which did no good at all. I was also getting hot sweats. I had some blood tests which only showed that I had a bladder infection.
February 2004 My breathing had become much worse, so bad that I was finding it hard to do my usual housework. Also the pain in my legs and feet had got worse.
March 2004 I had a feeling that there was something stuck in my throat. I still had my cough, but now I was coughing up a bit of blood, also when I blew my nose there were traces of blood. More blood tests which showed there was nothing wrong.
April 2004 I still had my flu like symptoms and was told by my GP that I had a virus I took antibiotics which did on good. My breathing became very bad, I found it hard for me to do anything. I was also developing a husky voice.
May 2004 I experienced a wheezing sound in my chest, and could hardly breathe through my mouth or nose.
May 9 2004 I had to get the ambulance to give me oxygen and take me to the Southport Hospital.
At the hospital they did tests on my lungs, kidneys and liver, but could not find anything wrong. I then had a couple of CT Scans, numerous X-Rays and an MRI Scan.
Dr Chai found a swelling on my wind pipe just under my voice box, and diagnosed it as Wegener's Granulomatosis. He started treatment straight away with Prednisolone and Methotrexate.
August 2004 Today I can breathe a lot easier but I still have a husky voice. I have a dizzy head and blurred vision, my legs and feet have improved also.
Dr Chai tells me that I am starting to go into remission and should start to improve.
